About the Overall (Common) Information

What is the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony?
The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony is an event where different schools of tea ceremony come together, offering a variety of tea ceremonies that transcend these individual schools. The event aims to promote Japanese traditional culture both domestically and internationally, while also passing down the underlying spirit of 'Wa' (harmony) to the next generation. This year as well, we have prepared many tea ceremony programs that anyone can easily participate in.
Is there an admission fee for the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony itself?
There is no admission fee for the event itself, but there is an entrance fee to enter the Hama-rikyu Gardens.
What kind of attire should I wear to participate?
The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony is designed as a large-scale tea gathering that anyone can casually participate in, so there are no specific dress code requirements. However, for the tea ceremony itself, it is considered good etiquette to avoid overly casual clothing such as jeans and T-shirts.
Furthermore, to prevent any damage to tea utensils and equipment, please remove watches and accessories (rings, bracelets) before participating in the ceremony.
Are there any items we need to prepare?
If you have been selected through the pre-application process for a Tea Ceremony(Indoor) seat, please make sure to bring the notification email confirming your selection.
While there are no specific items required to bring to the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony, for a regular tea ceremony, it is considered good etiquette to bring a kaishi paper and a sweet picks (kashi-kiri) used for eating sweets.
I have difficulty sitting straight. Are there chairs available at the tea ceremony?
There is a limited number available, but we do provide chairs at each place. Please notify the staff upon entering the room.
What is the difference between a tea ceremony, chaseki and an outdoor tea ceremony, nodate?
A tea ceremony, chaseki is where tea is served indoors in a room with hanging scrolls and flower arrangements. On the other hand, an outdoor tea ceremony, nodate is an outdoor tea gathering where tea is served, and one can enjoy tea in a casual manner while appreciating the surrounding scenery.
I have absolutely no knowledge of etiquette, is it okay to participate?
This event is aimed at introducing the world of tea ceremony to as many people as possible, and there are many first-time participants. Please feel free to join us. Additionally, the official website provides explanations about tea ceremony seats and etiquette briefly. Click here for details.
Is it possible to apply as a volunteer?
We are not recruiting volunteers for the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony.
Can children participate in the tea ceremony program?
The 'Indoor Tea Ceremony for Children' at Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum has an age restriction for children below junior high school age and their accompanying gardians. However, other tea ceremony programs do not have age restrictions. Please note that while you are not required to stay seated for the entire duration, it is recommended that participants are able to sit quietly for approximately 30 minutes to ensure the smooth operation of the tea ceremony. In cases where speaking loudly or causing disturbance to others is a concern, participants may be requested to leave their seats temporarily.
Furthermore, if both gardians and children are partaking in tea and sweets separately, a participation fee is required for each child. For children who may find participating in a tea ceremony challenging, we recommend the 'Outdoor Tea Ceremony - Nodate', where participants can more easily move around and enjoy the experience.
Is the event canceled in case of rain?
Rain or shine, the event will proceed as scheduled. However, in the event of severe weather conditions, the event may be canceled. If cancelled, it will be announced on this site.
Please provide information about allergens present in the sweets used in the tea ceremony program.
